The Heel

Judging when to help and when to stand when you are caring for someone back is almost impossible to get right all the time. One just has to do one’s best

Fending for one’s self is something we all want to do,
But the times I watch you struggle I want to lend a hand,
I feel that I’m a monster as I leave so much to you.

When health conspires to weaken us then putting on a shoe
Can seem downright impossible so daunting for you but
Fending for one’s self is something we all want to do.

I stand and watch, familiar tasks take on the guise as new
Your frustration is so evident I really want to help
I feel that I’m a monster as I leave so much to you.

Support but independence was the way that our love grew,
And now dementia’s reared its head nothing’s really changed
Fending for one’s self is something we all want to do,

Your view of life was black and white there was no middle hue,
For you it was so simple being weak or strong was all
I feel that I’m a monster as I leave so much to you

I’m determined when the time comes for me to say adieu
I’ll feel I had the balance right, you kept your sense of self
Fending for one’s self is something we all want to do,
I feel that I’m a monster as I leave so much to you.
